The book opens with reflections on being a gay Muslim in post-9/11 America, updating the perspectives and experiences of the author as related in Sex, Longing, and Not Belonging. A slightly edited text of that 1997 memoir follows. As Shivananda Khan, founder of the Naz Foundation (and no relation to the author) wrote, “Badruddin’s journey poignantly resonates amongst so many Diasporan lesbian and gay South Asians…. His story reflects so much of our own lives and our own struggles and pain. Through his eyes we see the many layers of belong and not belonging, of rejection and isolation, of denial and acceptance, of fear and desire to belong….
